WELCOME TO THE CUTTING EDGE - APRIL

Eugene Healy, Managing Director

in the weeks since our March issue of Cutting Edge, the situation facing the supply chain for the paper industry in our region has worsened further due mainly to the ongoing dispute at the UPM mills in Finland, which is now ongoing for over 100 days and added to which the devastation caused by the war in Ukraine has also wreaked damage on the European supply of paper from Russia. As this situation does not look like it will improve in the short term, we assure you we will continue to do our best to continue to provide our customers with their preferred products.

Recycled White Update

As everyone in the paper and print industry is aware, there are currently significant shortages of availability of paper stock for paper convertors due to the various factors we outlined in our email on March 14th. These include the closure of the Stora mill in Sweden, the ongoing dispute at the UPM mill in Finland, the disruption caused to the global paper supply chains by the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic and more recently the effects of the devastating war in Ukraine which has eliminated Russian supplied paper stock from the market. As we said in our March email, to ensure continued supply of paper products for our customers we have sourced a high quality recycled white paper which is available in all the weights required for our envelope manufacturing. As the Alt Weiss (Old White) paper is made from recycled fibres it is a softer white tone than the bright white tone that woodfree virgin fibres produce. As the current paper supply crisis worsens, this will be the only widely available white paper for the foreseeable future. Much as the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated a steep increase in online trade for consumers of all products, the necessary move to using more recycled papers, including recycled white papers, may well prove to be a positive outcome in the long term from the current paper supply crisis, as we in the paper and print industry and our customers and consumers in general get used to the softer white tones of the white papers produced using recycled fibers.

" The strike at UPM will pass the 100-day mark this weekend, with no official update given on the situation since last week...The strike is causing serious issues with the availability of graphic and label papers across Europe.."

Thank you for your patience and understanding and we will continue to keep you updated on all key developments and the effect on our product prices. Thank you for your continued loyalty and support and please contact our Sales Team with any questions or concerns you have for specific products or services. To request a sample of our recycled white paper, Alt Weiss, please get in touch with our Sales team 046 94 31584 or email sales@trimfoldenvelopes.com
